RELATED EXPERIENCE
In private practice since 1996.

Three years working as a therapist at a group practice in Olympia.
Three years working as a residential youth counselor at Haven House, a shelter for adolescents in crisis.
Eight years providing crisis intervention counseling and emergency services to victims of domestic violence and other people in crisis in New York City and then in Mississippi.
My resume is at http://www.gabiclayton.com/resume.htm
In a graduate school class on individual counseling I was asked to write a paper about my "theory of choice/philosophy of human nature". I consider myself eclectic, as I did then, but I chose a theory and wrote the paper. It still makes a lot of sense to me and tells you something about how I see things. http://www.youth-guard.org/gabi/counlpos.html

Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma - based at University of Washington in Seattle - a global network of journalists, journalism educators and health professionals dedicated to improving media coverage of trauma, conflict and tragedy. The Center addresses the consequences of such coverage for those working in journalism; advocates ethical and thorough reporting of trauma; sensitive, professional treatment of victims and survivors by journalists, and greater awareness by media organizations of the impact of trauma coverage on both news professionals and news consumers. They educate working journalists about the science and psychology of trauma and the implications for news coverage through this website, academic research, seminars, workshops and training. They serve as a forum for print, broadcast and Internet journalists to analyze issues, exchange ideas and advance strategies related to reporting on violence and catastrophic stress. They also create and sustain partnerships among media professionals, therapists and others concerned with trauma, and nurture peer-support among working journalists.

GoodTherapy.org promotes the movement toward more collaborative, empowering, and non-pathological forms of psychotherapy by helping people find therapists and counselors who believe "people are proficient," capable of feeling peaceful and satisfied with life, and can, with a bit of guidance, access their own wisdom and healing potential to overcome the obstacles to health & happiness. GoodTherapy.org provides a directory of therapists & counselors who believe people are equipped to transform the obstacles to optimum health and happiness. You can find a counselor and explore therapy on their website. I am listed in the GoodTherapy database here.
"People are Proficient: All people are born with the capacity to grow, heal, and change. Far too often people are seen as deficient and lacking what it takes to be healthy and happy. Our intention is to counter this destructive trend by promoting the therapists who are on the front lines of individual healing and social transformation. Let us open our hearts to the pain and suffering all humans endure and let us help those of us who're harboring too much of it, to release it, to heal, and to reconnect with their truer Self. Let us help this to happen by remembering that all people are born loveable, loving, and vulnerable beings. When guided by this truth healing happens more easily. For as we see the true nature of those sitting before us, they too may remember their own true nature."

The Four Faces of Anger - by Mark Gorkin, the "Stress Doc" which begins with: "What's the first thought that comes to mind when you hear the word ANGER? Frustration? Yelling? Loss of Control? Violence? Maybe fear, silence or avoidance? All reasonable responses...Or are they? A bit one-sided, for my taste, that is, the "anger glass" appears "half empty." How about a "half full" perspective: confrontation, energy, power and tenacity? Or honesty and being real?"
